When it comes to Art Education, I don't go into lessons expecting absolute perfection or immediate comprehension- my primary goal is to spark a love of creativity! I enjoy integrating enjoyable yet easily digestible activities with California State Standards so that students have fun while they learn.
To keep it simple, I focus on my "Four S's"...
#1: Self Expression
While I don't expect every student
I meet to become an art major, I do hope that many come to view art as a means for self-expression so that they can continue to make art whether they choose to pursue it professionally or not.
#3: Support
I’ve encountered many adults who outright refuse to create art simply because they were told that they were “no good at it” in childhood. Statements like these are not helpful and discourage creativity-
I want to cultivate a supportive environment where art is not seen as an unattainable hobby that only the “naturally gifted” may pursue, but one that everyone can participate in and enjoy!
#2: Skill Building
Skills that are learned while creating art are not only subject-specific; the artistic process may aid in the ability to follow directions, analyze given tasks, and many other skills that can be used outside of art and into everyday life.
#4: Safe Space
Art can be a very personal way for children to show their thoughts and feelings. Because of this, I want to emphasize proper ways to critique artwork in a constructive manner that encourages improvement without putting down other students. In turn, this can also be helpful in building students’ artistic vocabulary!
